LiDAR-based inventory and watershed-scale condition assessment across 165,000 acres and 12 watersheds in Keex' Kwáan, spanning Forest Service, Sealaska, Kake Tribal Corporation, land trust, state and city lands. Roads, forests, and streams mapped from 2019 LiDAR and ground-truthed by a local field crew through 2024, then ranked by watershed against eight indicators covering road density, stream crossings, old-growth and deer winter habitat loss, young growth thinning and timber opportunity, and salmon habitat above road crossings. A 205,000-acre resource assessment and management plan for northern Chichagof Island, produced by an alliance of Hoonah Indian Association, the City of Hoonah, Sealaska, Huna Totem, The Nature Conservancy, ADF&G, and the Forest Service with NRCS funding. LiDAR and aerial photography combined with field data collected by a locally hired and mentored crew: road condition surveys, more than 2,400 culverts measured for blockage and fish passage, stream habitat and electrofishing, vegetation plots, deer pellet DNA sampling for mark-recapture, and household subsistence surveys of 65 randomly selected homes. Work organized around five core areas: forests and shrub communities, roads and hydrology, fish, deer, and subsistence. Salmon habitat intrinsic potential models were developed and field-validated for pink, chum, and coho. Results carry into an 80-year vision and 5-year action plan, a Triple Bottom Line decision framework, partner-derived success metrics, and watershed-by-watershed project opportunities for stream, road, bridge, and habitat improvement across six watersheds.
